Cantor Mark Childs
The Shir Chadash Teen & Youth Choirs

The Shir Chadash Teen and Youth Choirs we comprised of 65 third grade thru high school students from the Congregation B'nai B'rith Religious School program. Under the directorship of Cantor Mark Childs, and with the assistance of pianist Don Krueger and ass't director Shama Ettenberg, these students explore and perform the rich variety of Jewish song from Yiddish folksong to modern composition. They were recently heard in the world premier of composer Michael Isaacson's "L'ma-asei V'reisheet . To Recreate the World", a musical Erev Shabbat service. They have performed with such artists as Peter Yarrow, Kol B'seder, Craig Rosen, Cantor Wally, Julie Silver, Doug Cotter, Lessia, Cantor William Sharlin, Cantor Patti Linsky, Cantor Sol Zim and others. When children sing to God, all other voices cease.

Cantor Mark E. Childs earned his B.A. in music from U.C. San Diego and his Master of Sacred Music degree along with an Investiture as Cantor from Hebrew Union College School of Sacred Music in New York City. He is currently serving his eighth year as Cantor of Congregation B'nai B'rith in Santa Barbara where, along with his cantorial. duties, he directs three volunteer choirs; the Shir Chadash Adult, Teen, and Youth Choirs. He is a recitalist in Jewish art song, folk song, and all vocal music of the Jewish people as well as classical and musical theater repertoire. Mark has appeared with the San Diego Opera, the Aspen Music Festival Opera, the Santa Barbara Grand Opera (Fledermaus and Don Giovanni), and has performed Mendelssohn's "Elijah" and Bloch's "Sacred Service" with full chorus and orchestra. His new recording of great Jewish masterworks entitled "Cycles and Symbols" with pianist/composer Bob Remstein is currently available through Sounds Write Music. Cantor Childs' worship services, educational, and cultural programming have enriched both Jew and non-Jew alike throughout the greater Santa Barbara area where he resides with his wife, Shari, and sons, David and Adam.
