Judy and Ruth are “Shir Joy”!! This sister act has been making beautiful Jewish music for over twenty years. They particularly delight in the preservation and performance of classic Israeli folk music. In addition, they have done a great deal of cantorial work, both separately and together. “Shir Joy” is thrilled to be making its first appearance at the Santa Barbara Jewish Festival this year, especially because Ruth has just recently relocated to the Santa Barbara area with her family.
Judy Dubin Aranoff teaches music and conducts the “Nashir Choral Ensemble” at the University of Judaism in Los Angeles and is the general music teacher and the Tefila specialist at Adat Ari El Day School in Valley Village. She is also assistant conductor of the Los Angeles Zimriya Chorale, having traveled with them to Israel, Prague and Nuremburg. Judy has served as a Cantor for the traditional service on the High Holidays at UCLA Hillel for about 25 years. Her love of Jewish music reinforced during her many trips to Israel has lead her to become deeply involved in this area. She holds a Masters in Music from UCLA and was a singer and assistant conductor with the Madrigal Singers there. She lives in Van Nuys, California with her husband, Mel, and two terrific daughters, Ronit and Yael.
Ruth Dubin Steinberg’s
first memories was of her mother playing old recordings of Israeli folk music and singing these precious tunes to lull her to sleep at night. She has been in love with the genre ever since and truly, one of her greatest joys has always been singing with her sister. After many exciting years working in the entertainment industry at the William Morris Agency and for Steven Spielberg at Amblin Entertainment, she returned to school and completed a Double Masters’ Program in Clinical Social Work and Jewish Communal Service at USC and Hebrew Union College in Los Angeles. Ruth is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, but currently focuses her time on teaching. She is an instructor at Los Angeles Hebrew High School, The Montecito Jewish Learning Community, as well as a tutor for Bar/Bat Mitzvah students. Ruth has functioned in cantorial capacities for many years and particularly enjoys her work at UCLA Hillel for the High Holidays, where she has been for 17 years. She enjoys both solo and choral singing, having sung with the UCLA Opera Workshop and Madrigal Singers as an undergraduate. Ruth lives in Goleta, California with her husband, Carl, and her two wonderful daughters, Gabriella and Talya.
